Switching internet providers can genuinely save money or fix a frustrating speed problem — but it can also introduce new problems if you don't ask the right questions upfront. Here's what's worth confirming before you cancel your current service or sign up with a new one.

About your current plan

About the new provider's offer

About the switch itself

A few things people commonly overlook

One of the most common surprises after switching is discovering the "new customer" promotional rate isn't actually better than a retention offer the old provider would have given to keep you — it's often worth calling your current provider and asking directly what they can offer before you commit to leaving. Providers frequently have unadvertised retention pricing that isn't available to new customers.

Another common issue is timing: scheduling the cancellation of your old service for the same day the new service activates, rather than a few days later, to avoid paying for overlapping service or a gap with no internet at all.

Finally, keep a record of the quoted price, promised speed, and any promises made during the sales call — screenshots of chat conversations or a note of the date and representative's name for phone calls. If the final bill doesn't match what was promised, having that record makes it far easier to resolve the discrepancy with the provider.
